Summary:

Overall, I think the book was a very well done book that presents what some normal people could do, to get prepared for a WROL situation where there could be no government for some time. If you were reading this book, I would be sure to make notes of the different items that he lists off and mentions on the book, he does give some great ideas on sustainable living, and how to survive the end of the world as we know it.

I have been reading Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse, by James Wesley Rawles first published in May of 2009. I picked this book up for about $7 and am reading it on the kindle cloud reader and through the kindle android app on my cell phone. Patriots Amazon Kindle ScreenshotBelow are my reflections on Chapter Twelve of this book.

Initially, I felt that the book was just a bunch of lists, and that there was not much investment in the character development of the people that were presented in this book. I also felt that there were some slightly annoying timeline inconsistencies in the book (other readers of this book have pointed out that the book was first wrote in the early 90s, and then was republished and updated, and then republished and updated again) but, it was fairly easy to get over these minor inconsistencies with the great deal of effort that was expended in describing the different tactics and items that the people had stored and the purposes for their storage.

I am by no means a close follower of any survival ‘expert’ and choose to take everything that I read or see with a grain of salt. Rawles has expanded my view of how bad things could get and why it is prudent to be prepared. A reader of Patriots could be left with the feeling that they could never be prepared to the same level that the people mentioned in the book are prepared, but that is O.K. if you are thinking about preparedness and moving toward being more prepared you are going to be more prepared than likely 99% of the rest of the population.

Rawles as a politically conservative christian person does have quite a sense of humor I feel, at one point in the book the group is faced with a set of looters, who are not only looters, but they are communist looters, and not only are they communist looters, they are cannibal looters. So the group ends up dispatching these commie cannibal looters, and making a display out of them.

Depending, on how you are going into this book (with respect to your political spectrum), you may think this book is either one of the better pieces of literature written in the last 20 years, or you may feel that this is a horrible right wing propaganda piece.

Finally, I think a Novel like this is needed to express that there are serious concerns with the current financial system, and that really the whole infrastructure that keeps life ‘normal’ is a house of cards in the modern world (especially in over-leveraged countries like the United States). And I am looking forward to reading Survivors and Founders, part of the same series from JWR.
