As you may already know based on my two previous posts, I picked up Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse, by James Wesley Rawles a bout a day ago this book was first published in may 2009. I picked this book up for about $7 and am reading it on the kindle cloud reader and through the kindle android app on my cell phone.

Below are my reflections on Chapter Three of this book.

[warning]Possible Spoilers[/warning]

  • First Aid, this chapter introduces you to the hard, and gritty truth that if there is civil unrest other people with critically harm other people to get what you have. Chapter 3 starts out with one of the friends from the survival group showing up with his girlfriend having a gunshot wound. The group’s nurse ended up having to perform both a blood transfusion to the victim of the gunshot wound, along with having to sculpt a shattered bone. The sculpting of the shattered bone ended up being possible because one of the people had a file in their gunsmithing kit. Having established procedures in the cases of emergencies like treating a gunshot victim is important to the survival of the victim. It also demonstrates the importance of having medical professionals in your survival group.
  • LP-OP, a recurring term (or practice) in this book is the idea of a LP-OP or a listening and observation post. The group makes sure that someone is always staffing the LP-OP at all times. The LP-OP is connected to the main operations center at the retreat by an old mil-surplus field phone that allows for the group to communicate with each-other over a hard point to point line rather than a radio, which increases their op-sec (operational security).
  • Chapter two also covers the back stories of each person in the retreat group, this provides an interesting background to the characters in this story.
  • The second chapter also covers that the retreat group had regular meetings and had ‘tactical’ hikes about once a month, to train with each-other and hone their survival skills.

I am going to keep reading, I will let you all know what I think of Chapter 4 of the book soon. Feel free to post your own reflections in the comment area below this blog post on Chapter 3 of the Patriots book.
