How To: Identify A Nuclear Fallout Emergency

The following guest article titled “How to tell if there is a real nuclear fallout emergency” was submitted to Prepping Blog by Robert Rowe.

The Nuclear Radiation Symbol

Recently, there has been much concern about the Fukishima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan.  It seems that the number four holding tank, which contains fuel rods, is sinking unevenly causing the cooling pool to lose water.  This is causing the fuel rods to heat up dangerously and emissions of radioactive particles, steam and dust are escaping into the atmosphere.  These particles are drifting across the Pacific Ocean and falling on the West Coast of America.  Radiation levels along the West Coast are at an increased level but there are numerous possible reasons for this, of which, Fukishima radiation is only one.

It is important to note, that, at this time, radiation levels are not dangerous so there is no worry of your children being born with a tail or fish gills.  You have a far greater chance of that happening by eating gmo corn than from the current radiation levels.  That said, you need to know that the radiation levels are on the rise along the nation’s West Coast and, if nothing changes, will eventually reach dangerous levels.

For the most part, radioactive particles are heavy metals such as plutonium and uranium.  They behave, even in particle form, as a heavy metal would normally behave.  In other words, they will rapidly fall to the ground where they can be safely removed.  Most of these particles will fall harmlessly into the ocean and sink to the bottom.  The radioactive particles we need to be worried about on the coast are the Cesium particles.  These are “bone finder” particles meaning that they will find their way into the bone marrow of animals.  I don’t think I need to discuss why this is particularly dangerous.

The government in its current form is unlikely to inform the public when the radiation is reaching dangerous levels.  I am not suggesting that the government does not have a plan to deal with this eventuality nor am I suggesting that they are going to behave irresponsibly.  Most likely, they will not inform the masses because they won’t want to create panic.  They will likely put FEMA in charge of dealing with the matter.  We have all seen how inept FEMA is with their handling of the Katrina disaster.

So it is going to be up to the people who live along the West Coast to look for the warning signs that there is likely radiation danger and to deal with the situation as best we can without interfering with whatever debacle FEMA is undertaking.  We are going to have to figure out ways to survive in a hazardous area.  But, before we can do that, we have to know what to look for to determine that the problem has reached a dangerous level.

Here are a few things to look for:

  1.  Pay attention to the dairy farmers.  One of the first things the government will do is shut down the dairy farms to prevent contaminated milk from reaching the general public.  Remember, Cesium will find its way into the bones of animals compromising their immune system and organ function.  If you see or hear of dairy cows being slaughtered on a large scale without any explanation, that could be a warning sign.
  2. Watch your farmer’s markets.  As the irradiated particles fall to the Earth, they are going to contaminate vegetation.  This is not just your trees and shrubbery.  Cesium doesn’t care if it falls on a farm crop or a forest.  If you notice that your local farmer’s market food supply is steadily dwindling and the proprietor cannot offer an explanation as to why, this could be a warning sign.
  3. Notice high levels of government activity at local reservoirs, rivers and lakes.  Radioactive particles falling into water supplies will not only contaminate the water but also the flora and fauna living in them.  It may be that the National Guard is activated by your State’s governor to prevent civilian access to these areas.  Or you may notice a lot of high tech equipment being moved or stored around water supplies.  This kind of activity is definitely a warning sign.
  4. Food prices are already on the increase.  It can be expected for perishables to increase in price as much as 100% over the next two years due to inflation.  If you notice that the price of milk, cheese, eggs, meat and such are increasing at a much faster rate than the other food items in your local grocery store, this is likely to be a sign of danger.
  5. If you live on the coast or are visiting the coast, watch for signs of limited pleasure craft recreation.  Notice the level of Coast Guard activity.  Look to see if there is an unexplained increase in naval military activity.  Take note of any scientific or university research vessels.  These are likely to be a bad sign.

At this time, there is no need to worry about the radiation levels, even elevated as they are.  The background radiation you receive from natural sources like the sun are far more dangerous to you right now.  While this is a different type of radiation and less likely to cause permanent damage over the short term, it is still important to protect yourself from it.  But, if the nuclear radiation levels along the West Coast continue to increase, it may not be long before we are going to have to start taking the iodine tablets and seeking underground shelter.  But that is a topic for another article.
